Abstract. This article examines theories that explain the reasons for the accumulation of problem loans (NP) in the financial sector. Three well-known theories are considered – the theory of moral hazard, the theory of information asymmetry and the theory of consumer credit. The study provides insight into the multifaceted drivers of NPL accumulation and highlights the importance of understanding these theories for effective risk management and financial stability.
